Kali Puja Sponsorship: The Complete Guide for Committees (2027)

If you organise Kali Puja, you are working in a very specific market — and treating it like Durga Puja will cost you money.

First, an important clarification. Kali Puja is celebrated on the Amavasya night of Kartik, primarily in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Tripura. Across the rest of India, that same night is Diwali. So when a national brand says "Diwali campaign," they usually mean lamps, sweets and Lakshmi Puja — not the Kali pandals of Barasat or Chandannagar. Understanding that difference is your first advantage: you are selling something the brand's national plan does not already cover.

Why Kali Puja is a distinct sponsorship opportunity

It falls in the same week as Diwali. This is your single biggest commercial fact. Brands have their largest budgets of the entire year live at that exact moment. You are not asking for money in a quiet month — you are asking during peak festive spend.

It has a night-time character. Kali Puja is celebrated after dark, with illumination as a defining feature. Lit branding, LED displays and illuminated gates perform exceptionally well.

Certain towns are destinations. Barasat, Madhyamgram, Naihati and Chandannagar draw visitors from across the region specifically for Kali Puja. If you organise there, your footfall rivals a good Durga Puja — and you should price accordingly.

Competition for sponsors is lower. Almost every brand plans for Durga Puja. Far fewer have a specific Kali Puja line. That means less crowding and, if you approach early, a genuinely receptive audience.

What you can sell

Your inventory is broadly the same as Durga Puja, with two formats that are worth more here:

  • Entry gate / arch branding — your highest-value position, seen by every visitor
  • Illuminated / LED branding — premium at Kali Puja specifically, because the festival is a night event
  • Stage backdrop — for cultural programmes
  • Main hoarding — road-facing, reaches passers-by
  • Food stall / kiosk space — very strong, since Kali Puja crowds move between pandals all night
  • Pillar and pole branding — cheap, repeatable
  • Prasad packet branding
  • Programme announcements

If you run a multi-day illumination display (as Chandannagar does), that is a distinct premium product. Price it separately.

What to charge

Broadly similar to Durga Puja ranges, adjusted for your footfall:

  • Entry gate branding — Small: ₹6,000–20,000 · Mid: ₹20,000–80,000 · Large/destination town: ₹80,000–5,00,000+
  • Illuminated / LED branding — ₹10,000–1,00,000 depending on scale (charge a premium; this is your differentiated format)
  • Stage backdrop — ₹4,000–50,000
  • Main hoarding — ₹3,000–35,000
  • Stall / kiosk — ₹5,000–50,000
  • Pillar branding — ₹1,000–8,000 per unit
  • Prasad packets — ₹3,000–15,000 per 1,000

If you are in Barasat, Madhyamgram, Naihati or Chandannagar with genuinely large crowds, do not price yourself like a small para puja. Destination-town footfall justifies destination-town rates.

Timing — this is where most committees lose

Kali Puja falls in late October or early November. Brands finalise their entire festive budget by August or early September.

That means:

  • July–September — approach sponsors. This is your window.
  • October — too late for most corporate budgets; you will be competing for leftovers.

There is a second, sharper reason to move early: brands planning Durga Puja are already thinking about Bengal in June–August. If you approach them then, you can offer a combined Durga Puja + Kali Puja package — and many will take both rather than negotiate twice.

The pitch that works

Lead with the three things a brand cannot get elsewhere:

  1. "Your Diwali campaign does not cover this audience." National Diwali creative runs on TV and digital. It does not put your brand physically at the centre of a Bengali neighbourhood celebration.
  2. "We are a night festival." Illuminated branding at Kali Puja is seen in the dark, at close range, when your logo is one of the brightest things in view.
  3. "Same week as Diwali, a fraction of the competition." Peak consumer spending, far less sponsor crowding.

Which brands to approach

  • Consumer electronics and appliances — Diwali week is their biggest sales period of the year
  • Jewellery and apparel — purchase intent peaks in this exact window
  • Sweet shops and food brands — culturally aligned and locally motivated
  • Paint and home improvement — Diwali is the home-renovation season
  • Banks, insurance and finance — festive loan and scheme campaigns run now
  • Local retail within 2 km — your easiest yes, always

Common mistakes

  • Assuming brands understand Kali Puja. A marketing manager in Mumbai may not know it is distinct from Diwali. Explain it in one line, then move to the numbers.
  • Approaching in October. The budget is already allocated.
  • Underpricing illumination. Your lighting is a genuine premium asset — charge for it.
  • Not bundling with Durga Puja. If you organise both, sell them together.
  • No proof photos. Photograph the branding lit up at night — Kali Puja photos are visually striking and make excellent proof.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kali Puja sponsorship worth less than Durga Puja?

Usually less in absolute terms, because Durga Puja runs longer with bigger crowds. But Kali Puja sits in a higher-spend week with less sponsor competition, so the value per rupee can be better — especially for destination-town pujas.

Should we mention Diwali in our proposal?

Yes. Framing it as "your Diwali-week presence in Bengal" helps a national brand slot your proposal into an existing budget line rather than a new one.

What if we celebrate both Durga Puja and Kali Puja?

Sell a season package. It is easier for the brand to approve one deal, and you get better total value.

How many days should we price for?

Kali Puja is largely a one-to-two-night festival in most places, though illumination displays in towns like Chandannagar run longer. Price fixed branding for the whole period, and stalls per night.

Do the same sponsors return each year?

Local sponsors especially, yes — if you send proof photographs and a short thank-you after the festival. That single habit is what turns a one-off into an annual commitment.
