Ganesh Chaturthi Sponsorship: What to Book, When and What It Costs

Eleven days, thousands of mandals, and a visarjan procession that shuts down cities. Ganesh Chaturthi offers the longest sponsorship window of any Indian festival — and the most misunderstood inventory.

Ganesh Chaturthi has a structural advantage no other Indian festival can match: it lasts up to eleven days.

Durga Puja gives you four. Diwali gives you a night. Ganesh Chaturthi gives you a mandal standing in the same place for a week and a half, with daily aarti, daily footfall, cultural programmes most evenings, and a visarjan procession at the end that moves through the city in front of hundreds of thousands of people.

For an advertiser, duration changes the arithmetic completely. The same banner, at the same price, is seen for two and a half times as long.

Where it matters

Maharashtra above all — Mumbai and Pune are the centre of gravity, with mandals in every neighbourhood and the largest ones drawing enormous crowds over the full eleven days.

Also strong in: Goa, Karnataka (particularly the coastal belt and Bengaluru), Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad's celebrations are very large), Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.

Growing in: Delhi NCR, Kolkata and other cities with significant Maharashtrian populations, and increasingly among diaspora communities in the USA, UK, UAE, Australia and Singapore.

If your business is in Maharashtra and you advertise at only one festival in the year, this is the one.

The four distinct inventory windows

This is where most advertisers go wrong. They treat it as one event. It is four, and they sell separately.

1. Installation day (Chaturthi)

The idol arrives and is installed. Very high footfall, heavy media coverage, and the day the mandal looks newest.

2. The eleven days

Daily aarti, daily visitors, evening cultural programmes, and steady footfall that builds through the period. This is the bulk of what you are buying and where the value sits.

3. Anant Chaturdashi and the visarjan procession

The final day. Idols are carried through the streets to be immersed, in processions that can run for many hours and draw crowds along the entire route.

Procession branding is the most underused inventory in Indian festival advertising. A banner on the vehicle carrying the idol, or on the accompanying trucks, travels past a very large number of people over a very long time. Ask mandals about it specifically — many do not list it because nobody has asked.

4. The pre-festival build

Larger mandals begin construction days ahead, and the site draws attention before the festival formally begins.

What to buy, and what it costs

Gate or entrance arch₹5,000 to ₹2,00,000. At a large Mumbai or Pune mandal, this is seen by more people over eleven days than most hoardings manage in a month.

Stage backdrop₹5,000 to ₹1,20,000. Mandals run cultural programmes most evenings, so the backdrop works far harder here than at a four-day festival.

Banners along the queue₹800 to ₹90,000. Darshan queues at the big mandals are famously long. People stand in them for hours. There is no more attentive audience in Indian advertising.

Digital LED screens₹8,000 to ₹2,00,000. Common at larger mandals, and eleven days of loop time is a lot of exposure.

Stalls₹2,000 to ₹1,50,000. Eleven days of staffing is a real commitment, but the return per rupee of stall cost is better than at any four-day festival.

Prasad and modak distribution branding₹2,500 to ₹1,50,000. Modak distribution is central to this festival and enormous in volume.

Souvenir programme. Cheap, kept, and read at home.

Title sponsorship₹25,000 upward, and well into seven figures at the largest Mumbai and Pune mandals, which have professional sponsorship operations and established rate cards.

When to book

| Month | Status | |---|---| | March–April | Large mandals begin planning; title sponsorship discussions open | | May–June | Best time to book. Full inventory, best positions available | | July | Good positions going; printing schedules being set | | Early August | Last practical window for printed material | | Late August onward | Stalls and stage mentions only | | Festival | Too late |

Book by June. The largest mandals confirm title and gate sponsorship months ahead, because their own construction budgets depend on it.

Which categories fit best

Consumer durables and electronics. The festival opens the autumn buying season in western India, and eleven days of exposure ahead of it is well timed.

Automobiles. Ganesh Chaturthi is an auspicious purchase and delivery occasion. Vehicle display at a mandal for eleven days is far better value than four days at a Puja.

Banks and NBFCs. Gold loans, consumer durable finance, vehicle finance. The long queues are ideal for detailed rate messaging.

Real estate. Particularly in Mumbai and Pune, where mandals map precisely onto neighbourhood catchments.

FMCG and food brands. Modak and prasad distribution is a natural association, and sampling over eleven days reaches enormous numbers.

Sweets and mithai brands — an obvious and strong fit.

Telecom and digital services. Long queues, phones in hand.

Local retail of every kind. The mandal is the neighbourhood.

Practical notes

Mandal committees are well organised in Maharashtra. The larger ones have run sponsorship programmes for decades, with rate cards and defined packages. This is a more professional counterparty than you may be used to elsewhere.

Weather is a real factor. Ganesh Chaturthi falls during or just after the monsoon in western India. Specify weatherproof material — laminated flex or vinyl, properly secured. A banner that comes down in rain on day three cost you eight days of exposure.

Ask about the procession separately. It is usually not on the rate card, it is usually cheap, and it may be the best value on offer.

Crowd control affects placement. The largest mandals have barricaded queues with restricted sightlines. Ask exactly where a banner will be relative to the barricades — a banner behind a barricade nobody can approach is worth less than the price suggests.

Check what the local authority permits. Municipal rules on hoardings and temporary structures apply during the festival, and a good mandal knows them.

Creative

Design for eleven days of weather. Sun, rain and wind. Cheap material fades and tears.

Design for night. Footfall peaks in the evening under coloured lighting. High contrast, heavy type.

Use the queue for detail. A gate banner gets four words. A queue banner gets a rate table, and people will read it properly.

Keep it fresh if you can. Eleven days is long enough for a message to go stale. Some mandals will allow a mid-festival change on digital screens — worth asking.

Overseas

Ganesh Chaturthi is growing fast in diaspora cities with significant Maharashtrian populations — parts of the USA, the UK, the UAE, Australia and Singapore. Diaspora celebrations are usually compressed into a weekend rather than run over eleven days.

Committees abroad list in their own currency.
