LED and Digital Screen Advertising at Indian Festivals

LED screens arrived at Indian pandals the way they arrived everywhere else: first at the biggest venues, then everywhere, fast.

For a brand this is the only festival unit that can carry motion, sequence and a changing message. It is also the unit where the gap between what is promised and what is delivered is widest. This guide covers both.

What is actually on offer

Two different things get called LED advertising, and they are not equivalent.

1. Screen time on the committee's LED wall. The committee installs a screen — commonly 8x6 ft to 20x12 ft — showing devotional content, live pandal feed, cultural programme footage, and sponsor creative in a rotating loop. You buy slots in that loop.

2. A dedicated screen you supply. You bring the hardware, the committee provides the position and power. Far more expensive, entirely yours, and normally only sensible for large brands running a full activation.

Most listings are the first kind. Read this section again if a committee quotes you a price that sounds too good for the second.

How the loop actually works

This is the part to interrogate, because it determines everything you get.

A typical pandal loop runs three to eight minutes and contains committee content plus sponsor slots. If your creative is 10 seconds in a 5 minute loop, you appear twelve times an hour. Over a five day festival with the screen running twelve hours a day, that is roughly 720 plays.

That sounds enormous. Apply three discounts before you get excited:

  • Nobody watches the whole loop. Average dwell in front of a pandal screen is 15 to 40 seconds. Most visitors see one slot, or none.
  • Prime time is narrow. Between roughly 7pm and 11pm the pandal is full. At 2pm it is nearly empty and your plays are being seen by the decoration crew.
  • The screen may not run continuously. Power cuts, rain covers, and the committee switching to a live feed during arati all reduce actual playback.

The questions to ask before booking: how long is the loop, how many sponsor slots are in it, how many hours per day does the screen run, and is my slot position fixed or rotating? A committee that can answer all four is running a real screen. One that cannot is selling you an idea.

What it costs

| Setup | Typical arrangement | Indicative price, full festival | |---|---|---| | Small pandal screen, shared loop | 10 sec in a 4–6 min loop | ₹8,000 – ₹20,000 | | Established puja, shared loop | 10–15 sec, prime rotation | ₹20,000 – ₹60,000 | | Large puja, premium slot | 20–30 sec, fixed position | ₹60,000 – ₹2,00,000 | | Dedicated screen supplied by brand | Hardware plus position fee | ₹1,50,000 upward |

A live example on PujaSathi: a digital LED position at an established South Kolkata puja, full festival, at ₹30,000 — the highest priced unit on that listing, above the main gate.

That ordering is worth noting. Where a committee prices LED above the gate, they are usually pricing the novelty rather than the delivered attention. LED is a genuinely strong unit, but on a mid sized pandal a gate at ₹25,000 will often out perform a screen slot at ₹30,000, because the gate reaches everyone and the screen reaches whoever is looking at it.

Buy LED for what it uniquely does — motion, sequence, a QR code, an offer that changes by day — not as a more expensive gate.

Creative rules for pandal screens

Ignore these and your money is wasted regardless of the slot you bought.

Assume no sound. Pandal audio is dhak, loudspeakers, announcements and crowd. Your audio will not be heard by anyone, ever. Design silent. Burn in subtitles if there is speech.

Big type only. Viewing distance is 5 to 30 metres, often at an angle, often through a moving crowd. Minimum type size roughly one tenth of screen height. If you would not put it on a hoarding, it does not belong here.

One idea per slot. Ten seconds seen once. A logo, a proposition, an action. Not three products and a website and a QR code and a hashtag.

High contrast, few colours. Outdoor LED at night, often in rain, frequently with a badly calibrated panel. Subtle gradients turn to mud.

Front load the brand. Put your logo in the first two seconds and hold it. Visitors glance up, not watch through.

QR codes: only if large and static. Minimum one fifth of screen height, held on screen for at least five seconds, with a reason to scan. A QR flashed for two seconds at 20 metres gets zero scans, and this is the most common mistake we see.

Check the aspect ratio and pixel pitch before you design. Pandal panels are frequently non standard. Ask for the exact resolution.

The practical realities

Power. Pandal power is generator backed and shared with lighting and sound. Screens go dark during cuts. Ask whether the screen is on the backup circuit.

Weather. October in eastern India can be wet. Ask whether the screen is rated for outdoor use or merely covered with a tarpaulin when it rains — the second means it is off when it rains.

Playback proof is harder than photo proof. A photograph proves a banner went up. It does not prove your creative played 720 times. The realistic standard is timestamped video of your slot playing in the loop, taken on at least two different days, plus wide shots establishing the screen in position. Ask for it explicitly under the proof of display standard.

When LED is the right buy, and when it is not

Buy it when you need motion to demonstrate something, you want a scannable offer, you are running a multi day message that changes, or you are a category where a static logo says nothing useful.

Skip it when the pandal is small and the screen is an afterthought, when the loop has more than six sponsors, when nobody can tell you the running hours, or when the price sits above the gate at a mid sized puja and you have to choose one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does LED advertising at a pandal cost?

Commonly ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 for a 10 second slot at a small pandal, ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 at an established puja, and ₹60,000 upward for premium fixed slots at large pujas. A digital LED position at an established South Kolkata puja is currently listed at ₹30,000 for the full festival.

How many times will my advertisement play?

Divide the loop length into the screen's daily running hours. A 10 second slot in a 5 minute loop plays about 12 times an hour, or roughly 720 times across a five day festival at 12 hours a day. Actual visible plays are far lower, since most visitors are present for under a minute.

Do pandal LED screens have sound?

Effectively no. Ambient noise makes audio unusable. Design creative to work silently and burn in any essential text.

What format should I supply?

MP4, H.264, at the screen's exact native resolution, which you should ask for rather than assume. Keep it to a single idea with the logo held from the first two seconds.

Is LED better than gate branding?

They do different jobs. A gate reaches every visitor and carries association. A screen reaches whoever looks at it but can carry motion and a changing offer. At a mid sized pandal where you can afford only one, the gate usually delivers more.

How do I verify my creative actually played?

Ask for timestamped video of your slot in the loop from at least two separate days, plus wide shots showing the screen in position. Photographs alone cannot evidence playback.

The short version

LED is the only pandal unit that moves, and the only one that can carry an offer that changes. It is also the one where the delivered value depends most on details the seller may not volunteer. Ask about the loop, the hours and the power, design for silence and distance, and demand video proof rather than photographs.
